Utah Valley Convention Center to Open as Scenic Meeting Space for City of Provo

Utah Valley Convention CenterFriday, May 11 marks the grand opening of the Utah Valley Convention Center in Provo, Utah. The facility’s first official event will be a private black-tie affair Friday evening, followed by a public grand opening Saturday May 12. Populous served as the project’s Design Architect in association with MHTN, the Architect of Record.

The Utah Valley Convention Center was designed to capitalize on the signature scenic views surrounding the City of Provo, while at the same boosting the downtown Provo experience with a functional and flexible meeting space. The facility is also expected to become a destination for regional exhibits and shows.

“We really wanted to take advantage of Provo’s beautiful mountain surroundings while at the same time making it a versatile and utilitarian gathering space,” said Populous project manager Todd Parker.

Extensive use of glass throughout the design highlights views to the surrounding mountains. At night, the same glass areas will glow, reflecting the abstracted mountain range developed on the interior concourse spanning more than eighty feet high.

While much attention was focused on the relationship to the surrounding mountains, similar consideration was also given to the streetscape context. The Utah Valley Convention Center will be a major feature in downtown Provo, but with careful attention to materials, scale, and setbacks it will blend harmoniously with the existing neighborhood.

The completed facility will provide more than 48,000 square feet of leasable space, including a 20,000-square-foot Exhibit Hall, a refined ballroom totaling 18,000 square feet and 10,000 square feet of Meeting Room space. All of this space has been designed to provide for a future expansion phase which will allow the spaces noted above to almost double with minimal impact to the existing facilities.

The Utah Valley Convention Center’s design capitalized on every opportunity for flexibility, and its location in the center of downtown will serve as an anchor for the district and a catalyst for continued growth in Provo.
