Peoria Sports Complex Unveils $31 Million in Upgrades for 2014 Spring Training
PEORIA, Ariz. – As fans arrive at Peoria Sports Complex for the first Spring Training game on Feb. 28, they will notice significant changes. The complex underwent $31 million in upgrades in the off-season, focused on the player clubhouses. Construction began in April 2013, at the close of spring training, and was completed in early February 2014. The new facilities were part of a 20 year lease extension agreement between the city of Peoria and the San Diego Padres and Seattle Mariners.
“The complex has served as a catalyst for retail and commercial development from the day it opened in 1994, and has continued to be a center for economic development for the city and state. As the first true facility ever designed to accommodate two teams, it began a trend that is now prevalent across the nation,” said David Bower, Principal at Populous. “These changes – both the new clubhouses completed this year and the ballpark enhancements underway – will ensure Peoria Sports Complex continues to be relevant and provide a fresh experience for visitors and players alike.”
The changes unveiled this year involved extensive renovations to both the Mariners’ and Padres’ clubhouses, with future modifications to the ballpark scheduled for completion by Spring 2015. The clubhouses each more than doubled in size with the renovation, with the Mariners’ clubhouse reaching more than 56,000 square feet and the Padres’ clubhouse coming in at nearly 61,000 square feet. Both projects will be pursuing LEED Gold Certification.
A key feature of both clubhouses is the integration of additional outdoor space, including shaded dining areas and patios for players and staff. In addition, the new facilities have completely renovated weight training centers, batting tunnels, a pitching gallery and dining facilities, along with administrative space to accommodate both major and minor league team staff members.
