Populous was recognized in three different categories – small venue of the year, new venue of the year and guest event of the year – at the 2014 Stadium Business Awards, held June 4 at the Royal Air Force Museum in London. The Arena at Stadium MK won small venue of the year, with the new venue attached to the football stadium in Buckinghamshire, England recognized as the best sub-10,000 seat facility in the world. First Direct Arena, located in Leeds, was recognized as the new venue of the year. The 13,500 seat arena opened to a great reception in September 2013 and has already hosted a series of world-class concerts and events. Finally, the opening ceremony of the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympic Games was recognized as the guest event of the year. Populous was responsible for the design of the Fisht Stadium – which held the opening and closing ceremonies – and was integral in event coordination and overlay work for the ceremonies.

Tom Jones, Principal at Populous said “We are delighted to see our projects at different scales being recognised across the awards, as this underlines our commitment to design quality, regardless of the scale or budget of our commissions.”
