Populous / HMC Architects Awarded $350 Million Los Angeles Convention Center Renovation

June 30, 2015

The Populous / HMC Architects team has been awarded the $350 million Los Angeles Convention Center renovation. The diverse design team, led by Populous and HMC, included strategic design partners including The Olin Studio and Chu+Gooding Architects to provide a powerful vision for the future of conventions in Los Angeles. Together, the design team developed an approach focused on placemaking, functionality and authenticity. The design shapes the place, integrating the expanded convention center into the LA Live District; creates expanded functionality, ensuring LA continues to be a world class destination that attracts local and international events; and communicates authenticity, showcasing LA’s unique culture, architecture and heritage.  The result of the design competition, the Populous / HMC Los Angeles Convention Center (LACC) 2020 design features a colorful, airy approach that connects the South and West Halls with a structure over Pico Boulevard, a large, unprecedented outdoor ballroom space, world-class flexible meeting space and landscaped public open space on the site that will result in places for LA residents to walk their dog, throw a Frisbee or go for a run.

“We challenged Los Angeles to look beyond the near term and consider a bolder vision to propel the LACC towards international prominence and also invigorate surrounding neighborhoods,” said Michael Lockwood, Principal at Populous. “This selection speaks volumes about the City’s foresight and progressive global perspective that seem to us as entirely appropriate for LA’s rightful place on the world business and tourism stage.”

The design is authentic Los Angeles, with space to breathe, space to meet, space to celebrate and space to sell. An expanded Gilbert Lindsay Plaza will welcome residents of Los Angeles while the facility’s modern, flexible space will attract the world’s top conventions, driving business, pleasure and culture. The design of the facility references Los Angeles’ trend-setting culture of art, architecture and design to set new trends in the convention industry. The new LACC will position LA as the international convention destination of choice on the West Coast and serve as a physical convergence of placemaking, sustainable design, functionality and authenticity.
