Jorge Betancor

Principal, Architect / Madrid

Jorge is the Principal in charge of Populous España, based in Madrid. He holds a master’s degree in architecture from the University of Navarra and is a registered architect in Spain and the UK. With 11 years of industry experience, his extensive background in sports architecture encompasses both European and American markets. His diverse portfolio spans soccer and rugby stadiums, elite training centres, and motorsport venues. He was involved in the design of the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, as well as the extension of the Etihad Stadium and Tunnel Club for Manchester City Football Club. Additionally, he was an integral part of the team entrusted with preparing the Mexican host venues for the 2026 World Cup, where he led the technical reviews and contributed to the design of the Azteca Stadium.

Jorge has also been instrumental in the expansion of soccer in the US, involved in multiple projects to renovate and adapt existing stadiums to host MLS football, including the Bank of America Stadium, home to Charlotte FC, as well as new-build stadium projects such as TQL Stadium in Cincinnati. His creative vision has also influenced concept designs for projects including the Casement Park Stadium and the Circuit of Wales racetrack in the United Kingdom.

Beyond his design involvement, Jorge has played a pivotal role in Populous’ business development efforts in Spain and the South American region.
