‘First major sporting event- 1979, Liverpool, watching Everton play someone with my father. Can’t remember much of the game, but the singing, the songs- I was amazed by the pure passion and dedication of the ‘fan’. Changed my view on what sport was, how the individual can get so engaged with the masses.

The opportunity to work at 3 Superbowls- Houston 2004, Jacksonville 2005, and Miami 2007. The pinnacle of any single event. Post game being able to have our party on the field of play, in a totally empty venue. Pretty special.

First FA Cup final in the new Wembley Stadium in 2007 with my father. Dad flew in from Brisbane for the weekend to watch it. We had a great time together with people who had shared the journey. Nice way to finish over 6 years involvement in making it happen, despite the heartache…’

Richard sits on the Worldwide Board of Populous and is a Director of the Asia Pacific office. He is responsible for all projects in Australia and New Zealand and based in Sydney. During more than 20 years with Populous, Richard has worked on some of the world’s most iconic stadia, such as Wembley Stadium, Soccer City, Eden Park, Margaret Court Arena, Forsyth Barr, London 2012 Olympic Park Masterplan and most recently Darling Harbour Live.

His first project was on the design team of ANZ Stadium. He then moved to London to work on Wembley Stadium and then Soccer City in Johannesburg, for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. He was also project leader for the London 2012 Olympic Park masterplan.

Back in Australasia, Richard then led the teams on the design of Eden Park redevelopment in Auckland and Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin. In 2010 he led the team for the redevelopment of Margaret Court Arena, and subsequently won the next phase of the masterplan for Melbourne Olympic Park.
