“My greatest sporting moment is watching the European Soccer championships with ‘Van Basten’ scoring a wonderful goal from a near impossible angle for the Dutch team.”

Ron is an Associate Principal of Populous and is a member of the Asia Pacific Regional Leadership Team. He was born in the Netherlands and worked as an Architect in Europe before immigrating to Australia in 2002.

Ron’s background is in Architectural Engineering and he has specific experience in structural aspects of architecture, including the building envelope, structural design and analysis and detailing skills.

Ron works across most project in the firm when it comes to large complicated roofs and bespoke façades. His technical design experience is valuable particularly in the Schematic and Design Development stage.

Throughout his architectural career, Ron has managed the architectural development and documentation of a variety of large-scale buildings including sports stadia, arenas, airport terminals, subway stations and a number of office blocks.

Ron was the Project Architect for the innovative Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin, New Zealand – the world’s only stadium with a natural grass pitch growing under a fully fixed roof. This project was made possible through the use of ETFE – a transparent polymer originally developed for the space industry, to clad the stadium’s roof and facades.

He was also the Project Architect for Philippine Arena in Manila, which is the world’s largest enclosed arena, with a capacity of 50,000; as well as the Taipei Dome – a baseball stadium and entertainment centre which forms part of a large commercial mixed-use development in Taiwan.

Ron has also worked on $1B ICC Sydney – a 250,000sqm convention, exhibition and theatre venue in the heart of Darling Harbour; and KL Sports City in Malaysia.
