Rod Sheard is one of the most experienced architects in sports and entertainment in the world with a unique portfolio that includes the design of two Olympic stadiums for the Sydney 2000 and London 2012 Games.

As Chairman and Senior Principal at Populous, Rod has been directing a team of innovative and highly creative architects on the design of some of the world’s most renowned sports, entertainment and public assembly buildings, which have been venues for the most successful sporting events of the last decade.

With more than 30 years’ experience, Rod’s distinguished client list is a testament to the design quality emanating from the practice. Some of the most recent projects include the design for ‘the venue of legends’ – Wembley Stadium, Emirates Stadium for Arsenal FC, Wimbledon AELTC and Ascot Racecourse, which he presented to HM Queen Elizabeth II.

His passion for clear articulate design and great enthusiasm for sport architecture led to the RIBA ‘Building of the Year’ award for Galpharm Stadium, which marked the first time this prestigious award was given to a stadium, and a number of architecture design awards for various other projects, including ANZ Stadium – the main stadium for the 2000 Sydney Olympic and Paralympic Games – described by Juan Antonio Samaranch as “the best Olympic Games ever”.

Rod’s award winning work has been exhibited in exhibitions around the world, from the Royal Academy of Arts in London to “Beyond 2012 – Design is Great” in Taipei. His publications have received outstanding reviews, and the University of Luton conferred on him the distinction of an honorary degree of Doctor of Science in recognition of his outstanding contribution to architecture, particularly in the field of sport.
