As part of an aviation planning consortium, Populous serves as an architectural design and placemaking consultant on the preliminary terminal planning and site selection phase for the expansion of the existing Terminal 1 facility at Oakland International Airport nearby the San Francisco Bay Area. The design and planning team assisted the Port of Oakland Aviation Planning Department in evaluating development alternatives for a terminal expansion that will provide additional swing gates for widebody international carrier aircraft as well as new processing facilities to include new Customs and Border Protection inspection stations, International Arrivals Building, additional passenger checkpoints and gate amenities, and inbound and outbound passenger and baggage processing accommodations. Populous is assisting Port staff in the development of placemaking strategies and tenant and non-aeronautical revenue-generating concepts and priorities. Planning work is ongoing.
