Populous-Designed Oriole Park at Camden Yards Achieves LEED Gold
Oriole Park at Camden Yards, the ballpark credited with bringing professional sports back to city centers, was awarded LEED Gold status by the U. S. Green Building Council (USGBC). It is the first Major League Baseball ballpark to receive LEED Gold certification as an existing building. Oriole Park achieved the honor for its year-round sustainable activities and practices, including waste management, recycling, paperless tickets, and reduced energy usage and electrical consumption. The adjoining B&O Warehouse was also awarded LEED Silver for similar operational sustainability practices.
“As the Orioles organization celebrates Earth Day this year, we are proud to join with the State of Maryland and Maryland Stadium Authority in announcing that Oriole Park at Camden Yards has been named the first existing building in Major League Baseball to receive the rarely conferred LEED Gold certification,” said John Angeles, Orioles Executive Vice President.
The Orioles celebrated the certification on Sunday, April 22 — Earth Day. Oriole Park joins Marlins Park and Target Field as the third MLB ballpark to receive a LEED Gold rating, the highest sustainability rating achieved by MLB ballparks to date. Marlins Park, home of the Miami Marlins, is the only MLB ballpark to open with a LEED Gold certification from the USGBC and is the first retractable roof building in the world to achieve it. Target Field, home of the Minnesota Twins and 2011 Sports Business Journal Facility of the Year, received LEED Gold certification for Operations and Management in 2017 following its LEED Silver facility rating from 2011.
Oriole Park is one of many Populous-designed venues to achieve LEED certification within the last year, adding to the firm’s LEED-certified portfolio of more than 30 buildings. The latest list of LEED facilities includes SunTrust Park, T-Mobile Arena, ICC Sydney, Georgetown University’s Thompson Center, the University of Utah’s Jon M. and Karen Huntsman Basketball Facility and the University of Colorado Athletics Complex.
