Groundbreaking for El Paso Ballpark Scheduled for May 30
(May 24, 2013) — After much anticipation, the city of El Paso, local dignitaries, community leaders and executives from Minor League Baseball, the Pacific Coast League and the San Diego Padres will break ground on El Paso’s new Ballpark. The groundbreaking for the new Triple-A ballpark in downtown has been scheduled for 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 30.
“This is a very exciting time for the city of El Paso as they prepare to break ground on a ballpark that will allow them to welcome Minor League Baseball to their city” said David Bower, Principal at Populous and project manager for the ballpark. “When the new ballpark opens, the nature of the site will make for an intimate experience and a true landmark for the city.”
“A brand new, state-of-the-art ballpark will be a tangible asset for El Paso that will be a huge element of our community’s economic growth and downtown revitalization,” said Josh Hunt, a member of MountainStar Sports Group, the owners of El Paso’s future Triple-A baseball team. “Having our own Triple-A team play in a brand new ballpark means high quality, affordable family entertainment for residents and visitors alike, and it can only generate more positive attention to and consideration for El Paso by those looking to relocate their families and businesses.”
The ballpark, scheduled to open in 2014, will become home to the Pacific Coast League’s Tucson Padres, an affiliate of the San Diego Padres. The facility will include a seating capacity of approximately 9,500, including club seats and luxury suites. In addition, the ballpark will include office space, weight training and two team retail stores. When the facility opens, it will also host concerts and community events throughout the year.
“The groundbreaking for El Paso’s Ballpark is a momentous occasion. It has taken many months and much hard work to reach this point,” said Mayor John Cook. “Now we can join together as a community to celebrate an event that is both a symbolic and very real development in an exciting and progressive future for our City.”
