Populous senior principal receives nation’s highest honor for architects

Populous is proud to announce that Founder and Senior Principal Todd Voth has become a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects.

Throughout a career spanning 35 years and counting, Todd has created the Imagine That annual workshop, led the design of 40 convention centers and is a frequent keynote speaker at international convention center conferences.

As leader of Populous’ convention center practice, Todd increased the firm’s segment market share from zero to 70 percent in the span of a decade, totaling $3.1 billion in construction and $15 billion in potential annual economic impact.

Voth_Todd_cropped“Honors like these are somewhat rare, but the ability to be awarded for doing something you thoroughly enjoy is even rarer,” said Todd. “I don’t believe anyone prospers individually without a whole bunch of help and support from many people along the way, and it’s clear the foundation for our continued success at Populous is that together we are stronger and better.”

Each year, more than six million people visit convention centers that Todd Voth helped design and deliver. Beyond his tangible accomplishments, Todd has developed a more effective way of integrating convention centers into the urban landscape, devised “experience audits” to evaluate the quality of the convention center visitor’s experience and advised architecture firms on the development of innovation workshops. His success has been realized through his commitment to exploring how to create better environments, experiences and architecture through programs, practice leadership and mentorship.

AIA Fellows are recognized with the AIA’s highest membership honor for their exceptional work and contributions to architecture and society. Approximately 3 percent of the AIA’s 88,000-plus members have this distinction. Voth joins Ron Labinski (retired), Joe Spear and Earl Santee as Populous Fellows.

“Anyone who works for and around Todd can attest to the passion and care with which he approaches both his work and his team members,” said Earl Santee, FAIA and Populous Americas managing director. “He is the thought leader in convention center design, has been integral in building three well-known and reputable firms into what they are today and has reshaped the convention center experience for millions, from Sydney to San Antonio.”
