Populous-Designed Stadiums Host FIFA World Cup Quarter Finals

July 5, 2018

Populous is delighted that two of its stadiums will host Quarter Final matches in the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Host nation Russia take on Croatia at the Fisht Olympic Stadium in Sochi, with Brazil playing Belgium at the Kazan Arena. Two other Populous-designed venues have also seen considerable action throughout the FIFA World Cup group stagesMordovia Arena in Saransk, and Rostov Arena in Rostov-on-Don.

This is the tenth FIFA World Cup in which Populous designers have played a major role, with stadium designs including Soccer City for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, and Arena das Dunas for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

At this year’s tournament, the Quarter Final match particularly marks the successful transformation of the Fisht Olympic Stadium, from its inauguration as the first main stadium ever created for a Winter Olympics at the 2014 Games, to a fully-transformed international football ground.

Christopher Lee, Managing Director of Populous (EMEA), said: We are very proud that Populousdesigned stadia are playing such a pivotal role in making the 2018 FIFA World Cup a successful tournament. Fans from around the world are uniting in our venues and the shared passion of football is bringing us all a little closer together.”

Damon Lavelle, Principal and project lead, said: It is incredibly exciting to see these four venues, each of which had their own unique design challenges and opportunities, come together to feature on the biggest footballing stage. We look forward to many more amazing moments at all of them.
