Senior Interior Designer / Brisbane
Sue has combined her love of sport and architecture in her role as Senior Interior Designer with Populous. She knows it takes a team to pull off extraordinary challenges, whether it’s ultra-running or architecture, and she revels in the opportunity for true collaboration.
The seamless integration of the interior design and architecture of large scale buildings such as sport facilities, airports, hospitals, convention centres and schools are her key design focus. There is nothing more exciting for Sue than seeing other people inhabit the spaces that she’s cooperatively imagined and brought to life.
Education and mentoring roles also distinguish Sue’s professional activity. She has lectured and tutored interior designer students at Queensland University of Technology for 15 years and values guiding and assisting the junior designers at Populous.
Sue worked on the interiors for the Brisbane International Airport Terminal, designing custom furnishings, carpets and joinery. The brief was to create an airport that felt more like a hotel lobby, where passengers would feel welcome. She selected all the loose furniture, prioritising comfort, durability and locally made products. Sue chose interior colours and finishes to reflect the Queensland environment, using silky oak timber and colours drawn from the landscape. The project cost AU$240 million and opened in 1995.
