Populous Senior Principal Earl Santee Elected to American Institute of Architects College of Fellows

February 12, 2014

KANSAS CITY, MO – Populous’ Earl Santee, one of the most prolific sport and experience architects and urban planners in the world, was recognized for his impact on the industry with the American Institute of Architects’ highest honor – the designation of Fellow.

“As the architect of many major league ballparks, he changed the way Americans and our fellow professionals view the architecture of sport,” said Joe Spear, FAIA, Senior Principal and Founder at Populous, who sponsored Santee’s submission. “More importantly, though, as an urban designer who understands the broader role these buildings serve for their communities, he has helped shape the landscape of many of America’s finest cities.”

The AIA College of Fellows, founded in 1952, is composed of members of the Institute who are elected by a jury of their peers. The Fellowship program was developed to elevate those architects who have made a significant contribution to architecture and society and who have achieved a standard of excellence in the profession. Election to Fellowship recognizes architects’ individual achievements, as well as their significant contribution to architecture and society on a national level.

The 2014 Jury of Fellows from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) elevated 139 AIA members to its prestigious College of Fellows. Out of total AIA membership of over 80,000, there are only 3,000 members distinguished with this honor. The AIA Kansas City chapter includes 29 Fellows.

“Earl has the innate ability to think beyond a building, and instead, consider how architecture can be a catalyst for growth and development in cities,” said Spear. “His designs have created millions of memorable moments for the people who visit his venues – and this is because he truly understands how design impacts and drives the human experience.”

Santee will be officially inducted into the AIA’s College of Fellows on June 27, 2014 during the Investiture of Fellows Ceremony at the AIA 2014 National Convention and Design Exposition in Chicago.
