Populous Unveils Preliminary Designs for L.A. Convention Center Expansion

Populous recently unveiled preliminary designs for the planned expansion of the downtown Los Angeles Convention Center.

Populous’ aim for the L.A. Convention Center Expansion is to create a dynamic design that continues to enhance the city’s convention and entertainment destination. Defined as a glamorous, influential and immortal building, the expansion will help position LA COEX as one of the world’s finest convention and exhibition centers.

“We’re really pleased with the changes that have been proposed for the Los Angeles Convention Center,” said Mark Liberman, President and CEO of LA INC. “Allowing us to have contiguous space and the other amenities that will be provided in the building can only enhance our ability to sell conventions and Los Angeles.”

The design team plans to expand the existing exhibit halls out over Pico Boulevard, which neighbors the facility. This will create one highly efficient and contiguous exhibition floor, which will increase the likelihood of attracting larger trade shows and exhibitions.

The jewel of the expansion will be an oval-shaped, brightly colored and naturally lighted 48,000-square-foot multi-purpose space connecting LA COEX and anticipated Farmer’s Field. The combined facility will be an integrated and seamless complex of public assembly and entertainment venues in the heart of Los Angeles.

Other Populous convention center projects include the Phoenix Convention Center Expansion in Phoenix, Arizona, Qatar National Convention Center Stage 2 Extension in Doha, Qatar and the San Jose McEnery Convention Center Expansion and Renovation in San Jose, California.
