Richard Breslin

  • Senior Principal
  • Auckland, Brisbane, Sydney

Richard is a Senior Principal of Populous. He also sits on the Global Board which oversees the governance of Populous globally and is a Director of the Asia Pacific offices.

Richard has had many years of experience of running major projects in the UK, Portugal, Italy, New Zealand and Australia. Given the nature of the building type Populous design, he has significant experience of delivering large scale highly complex buildings. On publicly funded projects there are often multiple stakeholders, or in the case of major events such as the Sydney and London Olympic Games overlay and master plan there are often competing requirements from stakeholders.

Richard has been heavily involved in the design process for the majority of the projects he has undertaken, specifically the new Western Sydney Stadium, ICC Sydney, Margaret Court Arena, the National Football Stadium at Moore Park in Sydney, the London 2012 Master Plan, and Wembley Stadium. He also has a deep understanding of the geometrical and experiential elements and determining factors of seating bowl design. His early work on some of the world’s most iconic venues, Stadium Australia and Wembley Stadium, have given him a grounding in the operational and functional requirements of stadium operations, planning, design and most importantly life safety.
He is focussed on delivering unique experiences to people through fan engagement and interaction, as well as exploring opportunities for how venues become part of the urban fabric of the cities and communities they sit within.

Richard has been with Populous for 20 years and during that time has worked on some of the world’s most iconic stadia.

Richard first joined Populous on the design team of Stadium Australia, where he then went on to work on the event overlay planning for the Olympics in Homebush, working on the Aquatic Centre, Stadium Australia, the Superdome, and public realm.

In 1999 Richard moved to London to work on Wembley Stadium, where he continued until the opening in 2006. During this time he was involved in the ‘Stadium of Light’ for Benfica Football Club, and Estadio d’Algarve for the 2004 UEFA European Cup. In 2005 he started travelling to Johannesburg to work on Soccer City for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

He was also project leader for the London 2012 Olympic Park masterplan, establishing many of the principles for what made the London 2012 Olympics such a sporting, cultural and social success.

In 2007 he moved back to Australasia leading the teams on the design of Eden Park redevelopment in Auckland and Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin with the first fully enclosed stadium with a natural turf pitch.

In 2010 he led the team for the redevelopment of Margaret Court Arena, and subsequently won the next phase of the masterplan for Melbourne Olympic Park before focusing on the recent major project work in Sydney.

Richard was Project Principal for ICC Sydney (a HASSELL + Populous joint venture) completed in December 2016. The $1.5B ICC Sydney is a 250,000sqm convention, exhibition and theatre complex in the heart of Darling Harbour.

Richard is currently Project Principal for Western Sydney Stadium, a new 30,000 seat stadium in Parramatta for sport and entertainment, due for completion in 2019. He also recently led the design team for the Masterplan and Concept Design for the National Football Stadium in Sydney.
