CHALLENGE: EverBank Field opened in 1995, corresponding with the inception of the Jaguars to the NFL. More than 15 years later, and with a progressive new owner, the team began to envision upgrades that would make Jacksonville a destination, highlighted by a best-in-class training facility emphasizing complete player wellness balanced by elements of leisure and comfort.
INNOVATION: Populous’ design team worked with the Jaguars to create an athlete-focused, hospitality-driven experience unlike any other. The result is a high-end locker room offering a contemporary brand of escapism uncommon in professional sports, with hints all at once of a private club, luxury hotel and the ultimate entertainment center. With wenge-wood lockers, backlit mirrors and a stacked stone tile wall, among other features, the space is designed to create a level of comfort that has set a new standard in the NFL. With spa-like showers and hydrotherapy tubs, the renovation meets the unique demands of the team as they continue to build their brand. Custom design solutions, like luxurious leather chairs, are designed for the athletes to accommodate their size, while technology, like a state-of-the-art ventilation system in each locker to dry equipment, a custom 41,600-watt sound system and 80 inch wide screen TV, adds an additional wow-factor. In addition, LED strips in each locker can be changed with the push of a button – individually or all at once – to any color, making an instantly transformable environment.
IMPACT: Since opening, the locker room has made a splash, setting a new standard in athlete comfort and elevating the Jaguars brand. New York Times wrote about the improvements, calling it the “nation’s most luxurious locker room” and the winner of “the design wars.” CBS called it one of the “best locker rooms in the NFL” The space has also had multi-use functionality – becoming the host location for dinners and events for sponsors because of the uniqueness of the renovated locker room.
