St George Illawarra Dragons Community & High Performance Centre

Wollongong, Australia
The Bruce Gordon Centre and St George Illawarra Dragons’ Community and High Performance Centre, is now open at the University of Wollongong’s Innovation Campus, establishing a true home for the club and a new benchmark for high‑performance environments in rugby league.

Designed by Populous, the $65 million facility brings together elite training, administration and community programs under one roof for the first time, uniting the club’s previously dispersed operations. It provides a fully integrated environment supporting the Dragons’ NRL, NRLW, pathways and community programs, strengthening performance, collaboration and culture across the organisation.

At its core, the project delivers world‑class high‑performance infrastructure, including two full‑sized training fields, an elite gym, sports science and medical facilities, and dedicated recovery areas. These spaces are complemented by education, administration and community facilities such as classrooms, a lecture theatre with an internal grandstand, and flexible program areas designed to support learning, wellbeing and engagement.

More than a training venue, the Bruce Gordon Centre is a community asset that reflects the power of sport to connect and inspire. The facility expands opportunities for participation across the Illawarra, particularly for women and girls, and is expected to significantly grow engagement in sport across the region over the coming decade.

Paying homage to the legendary Dragons “V”

The design also embodies the identity and heritage of the Dragons. The building’s form references the iconic “Red V”, expressed through a series of structural steel elements that pay homage to the club’s legacy while grounding the project in the industrial history of Wollongong.

Delivered through a partnership between the St George Illawarra Dragons, the University of Wollongong, and government stakeholders, the centre strengthens connections between sport, education and research. It establishes a platform for innovation, collaboration and long‑term community impact, ensuring the Bruce Gordon Centre will play a central role in shaping the future of rugby league and the Illawarra region.

"This isn’t just a training centre for the Dragons – it’s a place where the next generations of athletes will develop, where women and girls will have access to sport, and where the community can come together around something they can be proud of"

Anika Wells

Federal Minister for Sport
