St George Illawarra Dragons Community & High Performance Centre

Wollongong, Australia
The St George Illawarra Dragons Community and High Performance Centre, known as the Bruce Gordon Centre, is an industry-leading, high-performance training and administration facility that is helping create a significant community legacy.

Populous led the design for the AU$65 million Centre, which has brought the Sydney National Rugby League (NRL) team the Dragons’ five-plus existing facilities together under one roof at the University of Wollongong’s (UOW) Innovation CampusThis facilitates the crosspollination of the club’s elite and junior representative pathway programs.

The project has created a world class precinct and facility that delivers high performance, administration and community facilities.  It enhances the partnership between the Dragons and UOW across education, research and innovation and harnesses the community power of sport to expand health and wellbeing programs and other community initiatives.

The Centre boasts two full-sized NRL playing fields, high performance gym and sports science facilities, medical and treatment areas, and equitable facilities for male and female players.  Dedicated classroom and program spaces, a lecture theatre with an internal ‘grandstand’, communal function rooms, an allied health area, meeting rooms and office space for football, community and administrative staff and community partners make the Centre a community asset.

The Centre also features a research and collaboration hub that is shared with the university, reflecting a partnership built on values in health, education and community resilience.

"This is what rugby league is all about – community, a sense of identity and belonging, learning on and off the field and always looking to improve yourself right beside your teammates"

Anthony Albanese

Paying homage to the legendary Dragons “V”

The perimeter design of the building pays homage to the legendry Dragons “V” with the incorporation of large V-shaped steel columns that support the structure.

The Red V jersey is one of Australian sport’s most iconic symbols of excellence and celebrated its centenary in 2021.  The V shape continues to be a powerful symbol for the club, and the building’s design conveys the importance of this symbolism throughout the structure.

Wollongong is known as “Steel City” and the CHPC’s columns are a physical reference to the local men and women who have worked in the industry since the 1920s and to the origins of the club being an amalgamation of the St George Dragons & Illawarra Steelers.

The Bruce Gordon Centre includes:

→  Aquatic recovery, medical and treatment facilities

→  Equitable male and female player facilities

→  High-performance gym, hydration and sport science areas

→  Two full-sized NRL playing fields

→  A lecture theatre and meeting rooms

→  Community classroom and program spaces, including an internal ‘grandstand’

→  Office space for football, community and administration staff

→  A communal dining/function room and lounge

→  Office space for community partners

→  UOW research collaboration space

→  An Allied Health area

For women and girls in the region, the Centre creates greater opportunities for participation in sport and is expected to draw in an additional 6,000 women into sport across the Illawarra over the next decade.

The Centre is named after Dragons Life Member, Bruce Gordon, who is a distinguished media pioneer, businessman and passionate rugby league supporter whose enduring commitment has been instrumental in the club’s stability and success.

"This isn’t just a training centre for the Dragons – it’s a place where the next generations of athletes will develop, where women and girls will have access to sport, and where the community can come together around something they can be proud of"
