Southwest University Park presented Ballpark of the Year Award by Baseballparks.com

September 5, 2014

Southwest University Park, a new minor league ballpark designed by Populous and the home of the AAA El Paso Chihuahuas, was selected as the Ballpark of the Year by Baseballparks.com. The award was presented on August 28th  to team officials and Populous designers. Joe Mock, founder of Baseballparks.com and writer for USA Today has called the ballpark “a masterpiece” and a “work of art,” explaining in an official statement:

“The one thing that really blew me away is the way Populous designed the park to fit on a plot of ground that was less than six acres. I mean, those guys are the architects who designed most of the great sports stadiums of the world, and yet some of their very best work was done right there in that five-acre spot in El Paso.  How they arranged the seating sections with the size limitations and the physical constraints of the railroad tracks and side streets – and had it turn out so incredibly well – is mind-boggling to me.  I don’t think I’m overstating things to say that they are geniuses and that the ballpark is a masterpiece. And that’s why I used the word ‘masterpiece’ in the headline above my review of the Chihuahuas’ park.”
