VIDEO: Zhuhai Tennis Centre

January 24, 2016

As we go into the second week of the 2016 Australian Open, Populous is celebrating the Event with the release of our video on China’s latest tennis centre, the highly successful, Zhuhai Hengqin International Tennis Centre, which held its first major tournament in the build up to the Australian Open.

Completed in August last year, Stage One of the Zhuhai Tennis Centre includes a centre court with 5,000 seats, another match court with 1,500 seats, 12 training courts, an indoor training hall, athletes’ apartments and a tennis museum. The design of the Tennis Centre saw us overcome a number of challenges such as building on what was previously an aquatic pond and designing a roof which protected players and spectators whilst still allowing a true outdoor feel.

The first major event was held in November 2015, the WTA Elite Trophy, and the players seemed to like the design.

“The stadium is so beautiful. The courts and our hotel, everything; I’m really impressed. All of the players are more than satisfied to be here,” said Jelena Jankovic.

Caroline Wozniacki complemented the compact design of the Tennis Centre, “The fact that everything is close — the players’ lounge, the players dining area, the centre court — is nice, and I like that. We couldn’t ask for anything more”.
