The approximately 600,000-square-foot campus sits on a major arterial route. Alongside the arena, is a Prayer Tower, a prayer hall, baptism facilities and community spaces.
The project includes:
→ a 20,000+ seat, column-free seating bowl beneath a 135-metre roof span
→ a 52-meter Prayer Tower with a prayer deck for around 250 people
→ children’s areas, classrooms, meeting rooms and multipurpose halls, and
→ an arena floor that can be configured for gatherings, banquets, worship concerts, theatre and music.
Our vision was to create a space where people could encounter God, celebrate His goodness and grow as a community. We wanted to bring people from all walks of life coming together in meaningful worship and create a sense of belonging. Populous understood our vision and transformed it into a landmark space that brings our vision to life.”
– Rev. D. Mohan, Founder & Senior Pastor | New Life AG
The church plans to hold up to five services on a Sunday, with one congregation leaving as the next arrives. Managing that turnover shaped the design from the outset.
The Prayer Tower marks the precinct from the main road. It houses counselling, prayer spaces and is topped by a double-height prayer deck with views across Chennai.
A landscaped plaza rises gently by around two meters, a level change that separates arriving and departing crowds, before flowing directly into the open, double-height concourse. A grand staircase anchors the space, connecting the outdoor plaza with the internal concourse, while a mezzanine-level balcony overlooks the concourse below, creating places to gather and meet within the building’s central volume.
The bowl is arranged around a central flat floor and a main stage. It is defined by access routes that run through the lower and middle seating areas, responding to the requirement for volunteers to be able to move freely about the bowl during services. Beyond the bowl, separate controlled routes for pastors and VIPs, administration, volunteers, education, backstage and service staff allow the building’s many functions to run at the same time.
Designing for back-to-back services meant thinking about ingress and egress simultaneously rather than as separate movements. A large central aisle became fundamental to the circulation strategy, allowing one congregation to disperse efficiently towards the north and south exits as the next begins to arrive through the main concourse.”
– Japfiio Kayina, Associate Principal | Project Architect, Populous
Taking local building regulations into account, the bowl is particularly shallow. This keeps every seat easy to reach, while advanced audio-visual systems bring the more distant seats closer to the stage.
Populous has created a space that is highly efficient, allowing people to have an engaging worship experience. Clear sightlines, accessibility and a well-designed seating layout support varied programme configurations, helping people feel closer and more connected. The building works exceptionally well for both the congregation and the teams that work in it.”
– Rev. Benjamin Mohan, Executive Pastor & Project Director | New Life AG
Drawing on Populous’ experience in arena design, New Life Worship Center demonstrates how arena planning can translate across sectors, addressing challenges familiar to developers and operators across the Asia Pacific, including moving large crowds, protecting the user experience, maintaining clear sightlines and sound, and supporting different event formats.
