With one side of the ballpark open to the bay, it has created a unique twist on the knothole gang, with flotillas of boats turning up on game days to catch a glimpse of the action. Fans walk, take Bay ferries, water taxis, trains and even kayaks to the game. ‘Splash hits’ — when a Giants player smashes a home run into the water — have become a unique part of the stadium’s culture. There’s even an electric counter that keeps a running splash hit tally.
In 2001, veteran Giants outfielder Barry Bonds hit his 73rd home run of the season at Oracle Park, setting a record for home runs in a single season that still stands. He would go on to hit his 756th home run on Aug. 7, 2007, to break the MLB career home run record.
