Doug Beichley Joins Populous

Doug Beichley has joined Populous, the Kansas City-based sports and entertainment architecture firm announced today.

Beichley has 29 years of experience in architecture including the past 20 years focused primarily on sports and entertainment.  He has led several stadium, arena and training facility design teams, and he also has been a leader in business development in sports, entertainment and civic markets for more than a decade.

“Doug is a trusted advisor among his many clients,” said Populous Senior Principal Scott Radecic. “His strength in delivering projects will aid Populous as we continue as leaders in delivering great experiences.”

Beichley, who joins Populous after more than 18 years at AECOM, began his sports architecture career in 1993 as a project architect for the NBA Portland Trailblazers Rose Garden and the Rose Quarter Entertainment development.  Since then, he has become a well-respected manager of design teams for a number of collegiate and professional projects including Southern Methodist University’s Gerald J. Ford Stadium, Texas Tech’s Jones AT&T Stadium, Autzen Stadium for the University of Oregon, the rebranding of Quicken Loans Arena and the NBA practice facility for the Cleveland Cavaliers.  He has also led design teams for athletic facilities on several other college campuses including Florida State University, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Elon University, The University of California-Davis, Wake Forest University, Concordia University Nebraska, the University of Missouri, Hope College and Weber State University.

With continued development of conference realignment and increasing revenues from television and media the collegiate design and construction market should see a positive increase for the next several years.  In the professional and civic markets a trend toward renovations to capture increased revenue and a move to more sustainable environments is anticipated over the next decade. Given that, Beichley’s involvement in both business development and project management for Populous, with an emphasis in collegiate, NBA and civic markets, will aid in the firm’s continued success.

“It’s no doubt Populous is the industry leader, and I am excited to join the firm,” Beichley said. “I truly believe in the Populous brand philosophy; we have an important obligation not just to design buildings but really to affect communities and peoples’ lives.”
