BBVA Compass Stadium

Houston, Texas

CHALLENGE. BBVA Compass Stadium is the core of Houston’s East Downtown Redevelopment Plan. Home to the Houston Dynamo and Houston Dash soccer clubs, we designed the venue to accommodate both MLS and FIFA standard international soccer, football, lacrosse, rugby and concerts. We also designed it within the constraints of a $95-million construction budget, making it the most cost-effective soccer-specific stadium in recent history.

INNOVATION. Bringing our vast experience of European stadium design to bear, we created a first-of-its-kind soccer-specific stadium for the MLS market. The continuous exterior surface surrounding the stadium creates a dynamic sense of enclosure. The intimate spectator atmosphere intimidates opponents and marks a new precedent for American soccer stadiums. The stadium’s checkered metal mesh exterior also creates a bold architectural statement in the Houston skyline. Its industrial materials pay tribute to Houston’s heritage as an economic power.

IMPACT. BBVA Compass Stadium has already had a massive influence on the MLS, inspiring other organizations to focus on designing intimate, soccer-specific stadiums in the heart of their downtowns. More locally, its contributed to the ongoing resurgence of Houston’s EaDo neighborhood.
