Allianz Field Wins Big at Engineering News-Record Midwest Awards

December 18, 2020

Allianz Field, home to Minnesota United FC, was recognized by Engineering News-Record (ENR) Midwest as the Best Project in the Sports/Entertainment category and was also named Project of the Year for 2020. This latest recognition marks 20 awards that the purpose-built stadium has received since opening in 2019.

"Allianz Field is extraordinary: beautiful and unique, environmentally-sensitive, intimate and fan-oriented, and true to the sport of soccer."

Dr. Bill McGuire / Minnesota United FC Lead Owner

Coined the “best MLS stadium experience” by ESPN, the sustainably designed Allianz Field is a love letter to MNUFC fans and pays homage to the natural beauty of the North. With the farthest seat just 125-feet from the first-ever elevated pitch and the steepest safe-standing supporters’ section in Major League Soccer (MLS), the environment on match day is both intimate and intimidating for opponents. The fan-first design includes 17 types of seat and service options, including four premium clubs. The stadium itself is wrapped in 88,000 sq. ft. of PTFE, an innovative laminate fabric stretched over the steel ribs to resemble the motion of Minnesota’s many waters. The first-of-its-kind fabric façade is backlit with 1,700 LED lights that, when lit, mimic the glow of the region’s Northern lights. The environmentally friendly stadium features incredible water conservation efforts, including rainwater collection systems that nourish plants and filter contaminants and a reservoir located underneath the 28,000-sq. ft. Great Lawn that collects two million gallons of water to irrigate an urban park.

ENR Midwest’s annual Best Projects awards program is dedicated to honoring the best construction projects and the companies that design and build them in all 50 states plus Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico.
