Populous Designs New John Madden Football Center at Cal Poly
Named for Hall of Fame coach, iconic broadcaster and Cal Poly alumnus John Madden, the center reflects the values that defined his life and career: preparation, teamwork, leadership and opportunity. Designed in partnership with the Madden family, the facility creates a centralized home for Mustang Football that connects the program’s history, people and future.
Located at the south end of Spanos Stadium, the John Madden Football Center sits adjacent to Mustang Memorial Plaza, which honors the players and coaches lost in the 1960 football team plane crash. As players, staff and visitors enter the facility, they are greeted by a statue of Madden, creating an immediate connection to his enduring legacy and the program’s identity.
“John Madden is an iconic figure who taught the game of football to millions of people around the world, from his time as a player at Cal Poly and coach in the NFL to his memorable and straightforward broadcasting style,” said Michael Lockwood, senior principal at Populous and a Cal Poly alum. “We wanted to design a facility to honor Coach Madden’s spirit: bold, intentional, transparent and communicative. Every square inch of the building works hard to maximize the potential of coaches, players and staff.”

The facility’s indoor and outdoor spaces work together to support training, recovery and daily student-athlete life, creating a people-first environment that echoes Madden’s approach to the game. A covered terrace next to the student-athlete lounge overlooks the field and offers a flexible space for recovery and team gatherings. A detached weight room expands training opportunities, while outdoor hydrotherapy areas free up interior space for other needs.
The John Madden Football Center serves as both a performance-focused facility and a tribute to Madden’s lasting influence on Cal Poly and the sport he helped shape. Through thoughtful design, the center balances a forward-looking vision for Mustang Football with the legacy that inspired it.
“Coach Madden understood the student-athlete experience because he lived it — playing both football and baseball at Cal Poly,” said Cal Poly President Jeffrey D. Armstrong. “His vision helped inspire this centralized home for Mustang football, elevating the program in every way.”
The John Madden Football Center represents a transformational investment in Cal Poly Football and a lasting tribute to a legendary alumnus whose influence continues to shape the game.
