Populous Expands International Footprint to Continue Serving Canadian Market
Populous first established a Canadian office in Montreal, Quebec in 2022 to meet an increased demand for design services in the region. Since then, the firm has led projects that serve communities ranging from dense urban environments to the rural prairies. Coordinating with key stakeholders in communities from coast to coast, Populous will complete three projects across Canada before the end of 2024:
- BMO Exhibition Centre, Calgary, AB (2024) – designed in collaboration with Stantec, S2 Architecture and Calgary Municipal Land Corporation, this venue serves as an anchor destination for the annual Calgary Stampede and was awarded the 2024 Infrastructure Minister’s Award for Design Innovation in Alberta.
- Rogers Centre, Toronto, ON (2024) – Populous coordinated a multi-year, nearly $400M CAD renovation for the Toronto Blue Jays organization to transform Rogers Centre from a stadium into a dedicated ballpark with world-class player facilities and a modern fan experience.
- Southeast Event Centre, Steinbach, MB (opening late 2024) – in collaboration with Verne Reimer Architecture (VRA), Populous designed a unique hybrid arena and community recreation center that will become the new heart and gathering place for the community of Steinbach in rural southern Manitoba.

“No matter the scale, Populous delivers transformational, community-building projects that bring people together and have a genuine, positive impact on their cities,” said Kyle Morphy, Associate Principal, Senior Architect and Canada Market Leader for Populous. “With Canada’s venues in the spotlight during annual, regional and international events, like the upcoming 2026 World Cup, there is no shortage of momentum and opportunity for Populous in the region.”
In August, Populous was also selected as a winner for Parc Olympique’s (Olympic Park) design competition aimed at upcycling the materials used for the current roof of the Olympic Stadium in Montreal, which is scheduled to be dismantled and replaced. This recognition underlines an intersection of sustainability, community engagement and Populous’ long-standing expertise in designing Olympic venues spanning from facilities for the 1996 games in Atlanta to this summer’s Olympics in Paris. Populous is also the design firm behind the Avenir Centre in Moncton, NB (2018) and Centre Videotron in Quebec City, QC (2015), making it a trusted partner in the region for nearly a decade.
