Baseball’s Biggest Moments: The Unseen Work That Makes Iconic Events Possible

These moments are why baseball remains one of America’s most enduring pastimes and why millions tune in to the games. Yet, few realize the transformation that happens behind the scenes to ensure nationwide baseball events preserve the spirit of the game.

“Our role is to design spaces that allow these moments to happen without fans ever thinking about it,” said Todd Barnes, senior principal and baseball event lead. “Whether it’s a century-old ballpark or a cornfield in Iowa, the goal is the same — preserve what makes each place special while making it ready to welcome the world.” 

From integrating broadcast compounds and media facilities to creating hospitality spaces and temporary infrastructures, Populous has partnered with Major League Baseball for over 25 years to prepare beloved venues for the sport’s biggest events. While each summer event—including the MLB All-Star Game, MLB at Field of Dreams and the MLB Little League Classic—draws a different audience to a distinct destination and represents a valuable piece of baseball history, Populous reimagines each site for a national event without losing the authentic experiences that make it unforgettable. 

And without the transformation being noticeable.

MLB All-Star Game — Citizens Bank Park
Long before the home runs are tallied and before the first All-Star Game pitch is thrown, a transformation takes place to turn a beloved ballpark—like Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania—into the heart of baseball and the stage for a global audience. Parking lots become media compounds. Security checkpoints multiply. Broadcast infrastructure expands. Sponsor activations come to life. When the players, media and fans arrive, all they see is Citizens Bank Park and all they feel is magic.  

Since 1999, Populous has partnered with MLB to help design and deliver the weeklong All-Star Game experience that takes over a different city every year. The temporary elements are thoughtfully integrated into each site without overshadowing the identity of the ballpark or the essence of the game.  

MLB at Field of Dreams — Dyersville, Iowa 
Nestled among the Iowa cornfields, the Field of Dreams has become synonymous with nostalgia, family and the enduring tradition of the game. Few places capture the emotion of baseball quite like this—where generations have connected over summer nights on the ballfield, the belief in second chances and the simplicity of having a catch. 

For the last five years, Populous has helped transform this quiet tourist destination into a nationally televised Major League Baseball event while allowing the Field of Dreams to remain the Field of Dreams. One week each summer, the site known for its authenticity and simplicity must accommodate thousands of fans, players, operation production crew and media. Broadcast compounds, television infrastructure, player facilities and event operations are strategically integrated into the Midwest landscape to support Major League production. 

For the fans that arrive from around the world, special attention is given to the fan experience. Parking, wayfinding and guest amenities are designed to ensure a seamless experience from the moment fans arrive to the last catch of the night. The goal is to meet fan expectations and comfort of a world-class MLB game without compromising the charm that made the field iconic in the first place.

MLB Little League Classic — Bowman Field 
Every summer, the town of Williamsport, Pennsylvania, becomes a place where past and future baseball meet in America. While Little League players pursue their dreams at the Little League International Complex nearby, Major League Baseball returns to one of the oldest continuously operating professional ballparks in the United States—historic Bowman Field.  

Populous and MLB partner to prepare the century-old ballpark to host a modern Major League game by balancing preservation with performance. The event designs do not change what makes Bowman Field special. They protect the character that has defined the ballpark for generations.  

While the goal is not to make Bowman Field feel like a Major League ballpark, it is important that it can flawlessly accommodate a Major League event.  

To do so, stadium modifications are focused on event operations and production, fan experience and team accommodations. Critical infrastructure for production includes adding broadcast compounds, camera platforms, media spaces and technical operations. At the same time, temporary guest venues, sponsor activations, and fan zones are designed and adapted to improve fan experience. Temporary player accommodations are key aspects of the integration. Private entrances, clubhouses, training areas and recovery spaces all ensure the athletes have the resources they need to perform at the Major League level. 

The blend of tradition and innovation ensures Bowman Field remains true to its historic character while continuing to create unforgettable baseball experiences for generations of players and fans.
