Transforming the MCG for the NFL’s first game in Australia
Behind the scenes, Populous’ event overlay team worked directly with the NFL’s Live Event Production team, playing a central role in reshaping Australia’s largest stadium for the occasion – converting the vast MCG oval, more than 170 meters across, into a regulation NFL field just under 110 meters long and 49 meters wide.
Todd Barnes, Senior Principal & Senior Event Architect who led the overlay work for the NFL Melbourne Game said the MCG ranked among the best international venues the team has worked in.
“From my initial visit in 2024 to validate the MCG for the NFL, and through the 2025 master planning until game implementation, the MCG and its staff have proven to be one of the best international game experiences”
The NFL Melbourne Game is now part of Populous’ long history of delivering NFL overlay and event design internationally.

The transformation for Melbourne spanned the entire Yarra Park precinct, extending well beyond the playing surface. The field itself sits slightly off-center within the oval, a deliberate choice that allows the coaches’ boxes used by the Rams and 49ers to align with the midfield mark. Populous also coordinated the NFL-mandated camera positions around the ground, relocated media from their usual position to high in the stands, and converted the surrounding Yarra Park into a secured NFL Stadium Campus – all while ensuring the ground could be handed back for Australian Football League (AFL) duties in record time for a potential AFL finals fixture.
“Overlay encompasses all the temporary infrastructure and assets required to facilitate an event. If you were to take the venue and turn it upside down, everything that falls out is what we categorize as overlay, This includes everything from security to the fan and game day experience, wayfinding, team facilities, broadcast facilities, scheduling and even power requirements.”
What happens behind the scenes?
The planning for the NFL Melbourne Game started around two years prior. Our core team of staff worked on the event design and operations planning over that period, with an influx for load-in and gameday operations in the week leading up to the game, bringing approximately 30 staff on site.
“The field size obviously isn’t an issue for the MCG, but accommodating all the additional requirements is a unique challenge. The field overlay includes additional broadcast camera positions, pre-game hospitality and football operational requirements, while also incorporating temporary protection to minimize impact on the hallowed turf,” Mr Powyer said.
“A huge number of people do an incredible amount of work behind the scenes to ensure a seamless gameday experience for fans, teams and staff.”
Some of the key overlay challenges for the NFL Melbourne Game included:
- extending the secure line beyond the building
- repurposing most of the internal service level, including carparking
- building a temporary outside broadcast compound
- accommodating the additional international media that travel to cover the event
- scheduling operations to minimize impact on other stakeholders and events
- accommodating the field of play to meet NFL requirements, and
- upgrading existing changeroom facilities to accommodate increased athlete numbers.
The project required careful coordination between various organizations, including Melbourne Cricket Club, Visit Victoria, the City of Melbourne, VicTrack, Heritage Victoria and emergency authorities.
Over the last decade, the NFL has taken international games into some of the most iconic stadiums around the world, but in each case these venues must adapt to meet the specific demands of hosting an NFL fixture.
Redesigning an oval space for a rectangular game
But the real challenge was making a sport played on a rectangular pitch feel native to an oval stadium.
The MCG wasn’t built for this, but that’s exactly the job – you’re not forcing an NFL field onto a cricket ground, you’re finding the version of an NFL field that belongs there.
As well as the NFL Melbourne Game, Populous’ event overlay team has worked with the NFL’s Live Event Production team to deliver overlay and event design internationally – from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for NFL London Games to Super Bowls and international series games around the world. It’s a track record built on solving the same core challenge each time: fitting the full scale of an NFL production into a stadium built for something else entirely, without compromising either sport.
A defining next decade for Australian events
With Brisbane 2032 approaching, Australia is getting ready for a defining era for sport and entertainment, with opportunities to proudly represent itself on the world stage.
“The public often don’t see the amount of space and additional planning required to put on significant events like these. Key considerations for venues include security and risk management, media and broadcast requirements, operational compounds, holding areas for athletes and performers, parking and transport requirements, VIP access and fan activations,” Mr Powyer said.
