Crowds flocked to Zhuhai Hengqin International Tennis Centre in China last week for the inaugural WTA Elite Trophy which was eventually won by Venus Williams in her third WTA title this year.

The Tournament, which will be held in Zhuhai every year until 2019, was the first major event for the newly constructed tennis centre which was only completed in September.

“Organisers were extremely pleased with the event,” said Populous Project Manager Tiric Chang.

“Patrons, too, particularly liked the acoustics of the main arena. The 5,000 seat arena feels very intimate so that you can hear the bounce of every ball, and feel the emotion of the players. This intimacy increases the intensity of the atmosphere for fans. The roof solution also provides shelter to the crowd and players whilst still maintaining the feel of an outdoor court.”
