Populous, in partnership with Milwaukee-based Eppstein Uhen Architects (EUA), unveils the Milwaukee Bucks’ Froedtert & Medical College of Wisconsin Sports Science Center this week. The Bucks’ new 77,500-square-feet training center will serve as the home for the team’s year-round training and lies right in the heart of downtown Milwaukee.

“Our new training center symbolizes the championship-caliber focus and commitment to excellence that will become the hallmarks of Bucks basketball,” said Milwaukee Bucks President Peter Feigin. “This state-of-the-art facility for our players and basketball staff will return the year-round home of Bucks basketball to downtown Milwaukee, where it belongs.”

Designers infused the Bucks brand throughout the building while creating cutting-edge functional spaces athletes need to stay at the top of their game. The training center includes larger practice courts, a dietician-run teaching kitchen, hydrotherapy pools, in-house barber shop, spacious weight room and upgraded offices for staff members. Custom furniture, high-end finishes and lounge spaces help create a comfortable home away from home for players and staff.

“The Sports Science Center was designed to maximize efficiency and team collaboration. The facility will foster the potential of individual players while allowing the entire team to come together as never before in a state-of-the-art learning and training facility,” said Zac Braselton, project designer at Populous.

The facility seamlessly weaves into the aesthetic of the entire master plan for the former Park East corridor. It features dark brick, a glass entrance, and a weathered zinc exterior similar to the design of the new arena, entertainment district and surrounding development.

“It’s been a very rewarding and unique experience to be involved with these projects. Looking to the future I could see this being one of the greatest neighborhoods in Milwaukee,” said Greg Uhen, CEO of EUA, on the enhanced district surrounding the training center.

The facility will also serve Froedtert and the Medical College of Wisconsin for research in injury prevention and sports medicine. In addition to the training center, Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin will unveil the Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin McKinley Health Center this fall. The clinic, attached to the new training center, will provide primary, orthopedic and specialty care such as rehabilitation and physical therapy to the public.

With all projects expected to be complete next fall, the state-of-the-art development, including the 714,000-square foot arena, the training facility and attached clinic, will become a hub for entertainment and a driving force for growth in downtown Milwaukee.
