CurbShare concept streamlines airport terminal arrivals experience

Populous’ airport terminal arrivals concept, CurbShare, took home first place in the 2016 Airport Consultants Council (ACC) Young Professionals Innovation Competition.

The winning team composed of John Barnthouse, Josey Shaw, Timarie Trarbach and Tyler Eighmy was supervised by Populous Principal Alex Ogata. The team will present and display their winning submission at the 2017 ACC/AAAE Airport Planning, Design and Construction Symposium on February 21 in New Orleans.

By rethinking the arrivals process for passengers looking for ground transportation options at the airport curb, CurbShare provides a seamless and personalized experience for passengers with minimal construction commitments for airport operators.

CurbShare is comprised of a dedicated pick-up lane in the arrivals roadway that utilizes a dynamic, automated management system which assigns vehicle pick-up locations. These locations are marked by lit “pins” which change their designations in response to peak arrivals demand to cater to unique, customized passenger transportation needs.

Private cars, taxis, car services, shuttles, and buses are signaled to stop at designated CurbShare spaces providing a seamless experience when leaving the terminal.

The CurbShare platform offers a low-impact solution to the wayfinding confusion typically experienced by arriving passengers at the curb, providing a common location for passengers to access their ground transportation.

Supported in part by the ACC Members Foundation, the competition is part of the larger efforts of the ACC Young Professionals Forum, which is a means to engage young professionals in ACC member firms and enhance their professional careers. Targeted for industry professionals who are aged 35 or younger, the Young Professionals Forum is intended to provide networking, mentoring, education and career growth opportunities.

This isn’t the first award for Populous’ aviation innovation concepts. The practice recently received first place honors for their FLIP seating design in the 2016 Airport Seating Design Challenge hosted by Passenger Terminal World Magazine.
