The Hangzhou Asian Games Equestrian Centre, serving as China’s national equestrian venue, will host the postponed Hangzhou Asian Games 2022, now scheduled for September-October 2023. This facility will feature three Asian Games events: dressage, show jumping, and cross-country competitions.

Populous, collaborating with Tongji Architectural Design (Group) Co. Ltd., was engaged to conduct design work for the conceptual site master plan and conceptual architectural design of main area, weatherproof training hall, stable area and other auxiliary rooms for the equestrian centre, and also acted as the Design Consultant, providing advice and comments at schematic and development design stages.

CHALLENGE. The primary goal of this venue is to offer a top-tier equestrian facility throughout the games, leaving a lasting legacy as a community recreational space and fostering the growth of equine competition and training in the local area.

INNOVATION. Designed to maintain a tranquil atmosphere suitable for horses, it’s also a disease-free zone with quarantine areas for both domestic and overseas horses. The venue’s design aimed to harmonise with the natural landscape rather than disrupt it. Key features of the equine sports precinct include:

  • 3,000-seat equestrian arena
  • Warm-up areas
  • Cross-country courses
  • Stables
  • Maintenance facilities
  • Residential and training accommodations for grooms and an equine clinic.

IMPACT. The Games’ legacy will catalyse the development of an equine-focused parkland for users of the Commercial and Residential precincts while drawing in more equine enthusiasts to the region.
