Tottenham Hotspur Stadium Wins Big at 2019 AJ Architecture Awards

November 21, 2019

We’re delighted to announce that the Populous-designed Tottenham Hotspur Stadium has been named best leisure project at the 2019 AJ Architecture Awards. The judges praised the building as an “extraordinary achievement” and one that “takes stadium architecture on a huge step”.

The judges were particularly impressed by the stadium’s ability to provide a home for American football’s NFL without compromising its Premier League football facilities. This is achieved through a world-first retractable pitch design, which sees the natural turf pitch split into three sections before sliding under the South Stand to uncover and artificial playing surface.

Chris Lee, Project Director and Populous Managing Director EMEA said, “Winning this prestigious award is great recognition for everyone involved in the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium project. In Daniel Levy and the Tottenham Hotspur Board, we were fortunate to have a visionary client group pushing us to innovate at every stage along the way. Our intention was always to deliver a genuine piece of architecture imbued with the authenticity and atmosphere of historic English football grounds. But more than that we wanted to create a new civic architecture for Tottenham – a building not only for the football supporters but one for all of the local community. It’s immensely rewarding to see the efforts of the whole team being recognised.”

“There are some gorgeous architectural spaces around the stadium and the retail elements are well-proportioned. Everywhere is high-quality, including the toilets.”
