A Stadium Shaped by Its Fans: How Brand Activation Brings Buffalo’s Culture into Highmark Stadium
For the Buffalo Bills, designing a new stadium meant creating a modern home for the next generation while carrying forward the traditions and sense of place shaped by one of the NFL’s most passionate fan bases. The goal: capture what makes the Bills, Buffalo and their fans truly distinct.
Populous and the Bills started with visioning sessions and research, but the real story lived outside the meeting rooms: in the roar of Bills Mafia, the rituals of tailgating, the bite of the brisk Buffalo weather and the city’s industrial roots. Every step was about listening, especially to Bills Mafia.
From day one, Populous and the Bills set a shared rule: let the existing culture lead. That meant identifying and amplifying Bills Mafia traditions and finding authentic ways to translate them into design.
“So much of what we saw and experienced inspired the details ultimately brought into the stadium. From colorful tailgate camper vans to broken folding tables to the charge itself, we wanted every piece of Bills Mafia to feel right at home.”
Finding the Charge
After being completely immersed in Buffalo and the Bills’ culture, a subtle but powerful piece of the team’s identity came into focus. The Bills logo is instantly recognizable: a bison in motion. Strip away the bison itself, and the feeling of momentum remains, carried by a single forward-leaning stroke.
Together, Populous and the Bills recognized this stroke as “the charge” and chose it as the visual thread running through the stadium.
As you move through Highmark Stadium, the charge reveals itself in unexpected ways. It stretches across exposed cross-braces on the concourses, emerges as a pattern in 1.1 million exterior perforations and glows brightly behind the north end goalpost. Each appearance reinforces the sense of momentum and unity that defines Bills football.
This philosophy carried into more than 35 brand activations developed by Populous and the Bills, drawing on Bills Mafia traditions and translating them into physical expressions that feel distinctly Buffalo.
Giving Tradition a Physical Presence
More than 35 brand activations are integrated throughout Highmark Stadium, each drawing from the traditions, stories and visual language that make Bills culture distinct.
The 12 steel cross-braces throughout the stadium were intentionally left exposed, paying homage to Buffalo’s industrial roots and history as a center of steelmaking. From there, the braces became a canvas for storytelling, each carrying a different connection to the Bills, the city and its fans.
One activation features lyrics from “SHOUT!,” the Bills’ official fight song and a longstanding game-day tradition. Another, sponsored by M&T Bank, honors the people who helped bring the stadium to life with a signed structural beam and the words “Built for Buffalo.”
Elsewhere, familiar pieces of game day come to life throughout the building. One cross-brace celebrates Buffalo’s cold-weather home-field advantage through the Labatt-sponsored “Too Cold for Them” activation. Division opponents’ helmets appear frozen within panes of glass, surrounded by icicles and bold lettering that bring Buffalo’s famously frigid game days into the design.
At the Flag Bar, sponsored by Blue Moon, hand-stitched flags fill the space overhead, echoing the layers of flags fans fly above their tailgates and bringing that familiar parking lot scene inside. Created in collaboration with Buffalo-based Oxford Pennant, the flags carry the local character of the tradition into the space. Even the folding table, synonymous with Bills Mafia’s famously rowdy tailgates, finds a place inside the stadium, carrying another piece of the parking lot experience into the building.
Carrying the Story Across Disciplines
That connection to Buffalo extends beyond individual brand activations. Throughout the stadium, Populous and the Bills worked across disciplines to carry the team’s identity and sense of place into the broader fan experience.
Inside, the Suite Atrium features a 2,000-piece acrylic chandelier composed of individually suspended elements layered with custom blue and red films and sparkling light. The installation carries the Charge into the interior experience, creating a signature centerpiece that reveals the Bills logo through color, movement and perspective.
Outside, the landscape extends that experience beyond the stadium walls. The Family Circle is anchored by three monumental American bison sculptures, creating a gathering place centered on community and belonging. Nearby, the 1.7-mile Highmark Trail combines interactive fitness challenges, Bills-themed photo opportunities, family-friendly games and music-driven elements to promote wellness, community and Bills fandom year-round.
Together, these moments move the story across scales, from architecture and interiors to the landscape, gathering spaces and individual details fans encounter along the way.
Designing Around What Makes the Place Different
Highmark Stadium wasn’t designed to replicate another NFL venue. It was designed for Buffalo.
The weather, the steel industry, the tailgates, the music, the fans and the traditions that surround Bills football all informed the collaborative design process. By understanding why these elements matter, Populous and the Bills found authentic ways to translate them into the stadium’s design.
That approach extends beyond any single activation. Developed collaboratively across disciplines from the beginning, brand activation works in step with architecture, interior design, landscape architecture and wayfinding to carry the Bills’ identity and Buffalo’s sense of place throughout the fan experience.
Most importantly, this integrated approach helps a new building feel deeply connected to the community it represents.
