Two Populous-designed stadiums, Motera Stadium in India and London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium have been recognised amongst Project Management Institute’s (PMI’s) 2020 Most Influential Projects.

Motera Stadium is the world’s largest cricket stadium and came in at number 23 on the global top 50 Most Influential list. Motera Stadium also ranked number one in India’s Top 10 list, reflecting the significance and scale of the project for this region and across the globe.

Tottenham Hotspur Stadium was listed at number eight in Europe’s Top 10 Most Influential Projects, further cementing its reputation for ground-breaking, innovative stadium design features.

"It’s fantastic to see two of our projects recognised amongst so many important and intriguing 2020 initiatives. It highlights just how essential architecture is to our social fabric, even in a socially-distanced world.”

PMI’s 2020 edition of Most Influential Projects features innovative and compelling initiatives that have moved forward despite the global pandemic. Thousands of projects recommended by the project management community were evaluated by PMI’s thought leadership team to identify projects that are collectively shaping the future.

Populous Managing Director, EMEA, Christopher Lee said, “It is gratifying and humbling to see our work recognised alongside initiatives such as the Nightingale Hospital in London and the European Green Deal. This year has laid bare the significance of sport and live sports events in our communities – the joy they bring and their capacity to inspire us. In what continues to be an incredibly testing climate for the sector, we are continuing to work with clubs and stadium operators on the safe return of fans, to once again bring us the moments of triumph and tribulation that we enjoy so much.”

  • Motera Stadium’s round, open design allows 360-degree views for 110,000 passionate cricket fans.

People in India identify with cricket as a national sport, a game that unites all, bringing generations of passionate cricket fans together. Located in Ahmedabad, India, Morea Stadium is home to the Gujarat Cricket Association and added 10,000 seats more than Australia’s iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground.

With a deliberate round, open stadium providing 360-degree views, every one of Motera Stadium’s 110,000 seats have uninterrupted sightlines of the field and pitch so that spectators feel they’re fully immersed in what’s happening on the ground. Designed for the people, the high ratio of general admissions seating makes any match more accessible for tens of thousands of cricket fans and maintains a sense of occasion, sight and sound for smaller events.

  • Tottenham Hotspur Stadium takes match day atmosphere to new heights.

The multi-award winning Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is the first of its kind, showcasing a retractable pitch for ultimate event flexibility. Tottenham is the only true hybrid football and NFL stadium with optimum facilities for both codes and fans, drawing a truly diverse range of people together.

Spectators from the world’s two most popular sports are brought closer to the pitch than at any other comparable ground in the UK, generating a world-class match day atmosphere. With stands angled at 35 degrees, a 17,500-strong home spectator ‘wall of sound’ in the South Stand, a concert-hall inspired acoustic set up and integrated wireless connectivity throughout the venue, every heart-pounding moment can be felt and shared live across the globe.
