Leaders of the city of Steinbach, Manitoba, came together to envision a public/private investment plan to revitalize the city’s core, uplift their community and spur continued growth in the region.

This ambitious plan was realized as the $74.3 million CAD, 112,000 sq ft, Southeast Event Centre, a unique multi-use event and community recreation venue that bridges culture, entertainment and high-performance sport. An addition to the existing recreation centre in Steinbach and the TG Smith Centre arena, the facility features a 2,500-seat entertainment arena which is expandable to 4,000 for concerts.
The facility also features a gymnasium/hall, fitness areas, multipurpose rooms and a community atrium with multiple food and beverage options, including a full-scale cafe/restaurant. The arena and best-in-class dressing room area is the home of the Steinbach Pistons of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League, one of the top junior ‘A’ hockey clubs in the country.
The gymnasium/hall has a 500-person capacity, suitable for banquets, tradeshows and meetings in addition to sports and recreational uses. A 3-lane track, fitness area and Multi-Purpose Room studio spaces on the concourse level provide additional wellness-based programming. Sustainable design strategies were applied, including reduced GHGs, natural refrigerants, natural ventilation, urban renewal, active transportation links and increased construction efficiencies to set the standard for future city development.
As an investment in downtown Steinbach, the Southeast Event Centre plays a key role in creating a sense of place and community pride. With public open houses, online communication and city council presentations, this project is the result of true collaboration between city leadership and Steinbach residents. The Southeast Event Centre lays the groundwork for further development as part of a larger, sustainable vision of community gathering and introduces new urban design opportunities for the city.
