Recap: Populous Delivers Esports Talk at SXSW 2019

March 22, 2019

SXSW is never short on future thinking, and at Populous we’re always looking for the next big thing if we’re not already working on it. SXSW 2019 was no exception to the rule, and this year we teamed up with Jonathon Oudthone, President of Esports Stadium Arlington, to explore what’s to come from the $1 billion esports industry, how it’s changing the way fans consume content, the functionality of sports venues and the unlimited potential for development and revitalization through next-generation, purpose-built esports venues.

  • Brian Mirakian talks at SXSW.

Brian Mirakian took the stage alongside Jonathon and discussed how esports venues can bring cities and sports teams new revenue streams, increased commerce and development and reinvigorated neighborhoods. Through insights gained of more than five years of intensive research and the debut of Esports Stadium Arlington in November, the most robust esports venue in North America, Brian and Jonathon shed light on the growth of the sport and the future of the next-generation, high-performance esports and live entertainment arenas.

The session marks the fourth time we’ve presented at SXSW in the last five years. In 2015, we discussed the continuing evolution of sports venues. In 2017, we explored the future of esports stadiums. Last year, we partnered with adidas on the future of the connected athletic experience.
