Chosen from a group of renowned firms, Fentress spearheaded the expansion and redevelopment of Seattle-Tacoma International Airport’s iconic 1949 Central Terminal. To set this ambitious project in motion, the Port of Seattle launched it with a clear and inspiring vision to:
- Restore the excitement of travel
- Provide modern comforts and conveniences for a diverse audience
- Express the region’s unique culture and natural environment
- Create a vibrant central hub for the entire airport complex
- Enhance the travel experience by creating a welcoming environment that celebrates both the feeling of coming home and the joy of new arrivals.
Bringing the Pacific Northwest Culture to the Central Terminal
At the heart of this transformation is the Pacific Marketplace, a dynamic and open space filled with abundant seating, dining options, lush landscaping, artwork, and vibrant storefronts. This central area not only creates a lively atmosphere but also fosters a sense of community and relaxation. The terminal’s signature feature, a 60-foot by 350-foot glass curtainwall — the largest of its kind in North America — invites travelers to gaze out at sweeping views of the airfield and the Olympic Mountain Range, forging an unparalleled connection to the Pacific Northwest’s natural beauty. This seamless blend of function and scenery enhances the overall travel experience, making each visit memorable.
