Rejecting the stark, high-tech feel common to many modern airports, Fentress humanized the terminal’s interior spaces and created a feeling of flight and motion throughout the building.
The terminal is configured in a welcoming arc that embraces patrons arriving curbside, and a series of ‘winged’ landside canopies suggest a sensation of movement in the façade. Fentress’ design infuses the rich heritage of Korean architecture and culture while creating a memorable gateway to the Pacific Rim.
As the terminal’s sweeping rooflines recall the gentle arc of ancient Korean palaces, numerous steel masts and a catenary roof support system emulate ships anchored nearby in Incheon Harbor. This terminal design has rekindled the excitement of air travel by blending traditional Korean culture with a comfortable, convenient passenger experience.
"Our design for Incheon’s passenger terminal created a timeless, iconic and highly functional building that refines the passenger experience. Incheon has complemented this design with a superior operations staff to produce the world’s finest airport."
Curtis Fentress
Senior Principal, Fentress Studios, a Populous Company
Passengers arriving curbside at Incheon are welcomed in a unique Meeters-and-Greeters Hall before proceeding to check-in. The terminal’s functional and symbolic hub is Millennium Hall, a soaring four-story space with a centerpiece reflection pond flanked by native pine trees up to 20m-tall. Two glass elevators evoking waterfalls provide access between the levels. The great hall, used for exhibitions and ceremonial functions, serves as a central location for transportation facilities, customer service amenities and airport operations.
Throughout the terminal, passengers benefit from intuitive way-finding with short walking distances between destination points. The interiors are infused with abundant daylighting and indigenous woods, granite and natural landscaping that serve to soothe and comfort passengers. Traditional Korean gardens, which lend the space a peaceful and inviting feel, are cultivated by natural daylight via the roof’s numerous clerestories and skylights. A diverse range of concessions are highly concentrated in the great hall and extend along the concourses
Blending tradition with forward-thinking design, the ICN Passenger Terminal offers a clear, welcoming point of entry into South Korea.
