“My greatest sporting moment was coming first in my category (Early Modern) in the Targa Tasmania tarmac rally. It was 2007 and only my second time competing. We didn’t have the fastest car in our category but we had equilibrium and momentum – the perfect combination on twisty roads. I love the whole experience of the event – the camaraderie, the fear, the exhilaration, the focus and the huge grin of relief at the end.”
Paul is an internationally recognised expert in the design and master planning of stadia, racecourses, arenas and the planning of Olympic Games. He is an Australian architect with worldwide success. Paul sits on the global board of Populous, as both an owner of the worldwide firm and CEO of the Australasian region.
Paul was recognized as an Australian Export Hero in 2010 by the Australian Institute of Export – only the third architect to ever have received this award. In the past two years Populous has twice won the Premier of Queensland’s Export awards (Services category) and Paul has been a member of the Queensland Government’s Export Connections Committee. He is passionate about Australia exporting its services, knowledge and creative skills and is proud to represent Australia and the Creative Industries in export endeavours around the world.
During his extensive career, Paul has led the development of world renowned sports and entertainment buildings. Paul led the team designing the Sydney Olympic Stadium (now called ANZ Stadium), Nanjing Sports Park for the China National Games, Taiwan Arena, and the racecourses for the Hong Kong Jockey Club, as well as most other major stadia in Australia.
Many of Paul’s stadium designs have become a centerpiece for a city’s development, as well as showcasing Australian skills and expertise. Governments throughout Asia have invited Paul to lead discussions on the procurement and design of sports facilities to best suit the needs of a city and its community. Paul is also an international speaker and has addressed the IOC in Lausanne, Switzerland; and the World Sports Summit in Beijing, China.
