Westworld Celebrates Equidome Expansion and Rededication as the Tony Nelssen Equestrian Center

Officials were on hand Thursday, September 29 for the WestWorld Celebration and rededication of the Equidome as the Tony Nelssen Equestrian Center.  The celebration also marked the opening of the Scottsdale Classic Quarter Horse Show, which is one of the nation’s largest.

Tony Nelssen, who lost his battle with cancer in May 2010, was a tireless supporter of WestWorld, both as an equestrian and Scottsdale City Council member.  He also served on the WestWorld Subcommittee with facility operations oversight responsibilities.  Nelssen was an important driving force in the recent facility expansion and upgrade projects undertaken by the City of Scottsdale and the Equidome renovation and expansion is WestWorld’s crowning jewel.

The existing open air Equidome will be fully enclosed and conditioned in an effort to expand the equestrian event season through the summer.  Other Populous design enhancements within the Equidome will include the addition of party suites, permanent foodservice facilities, new toilets and additional retractable concourse seating.  The project also includes the addition of approximately 151,000 square feet of multi-use exhibit/equestrian space connected to the Equidome.  This new space will feature an innovative dual climate control/natural ventilation system as it will support an extremely wide range of uses throughout the seasons, including equestrian tradeshows, seated events, entertainment, horse stalls and even horse arenas.

This project will solidify WestWorld as one of North America’s most important equestrian sport venues.  The facility hosts some of the nation’s largest and most prestigious equestrian events including the Scottsdale Classic, the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show (the world’s largest Arabian show), Parada del Sol and the Sun Country Circuit Quarter Horse Show.  WestWorld is also host to the original and well-known Barrett-Jackson Classic Car Auction.

Populous, the global leader in sports, fairground, multi-use facility and equestrian architecture, is the Architect of Record for the project.  Major construction is scheduled to commence in April 2012 with the final phase of construction to be completed by January 2014.
