World leaders in sports and entertainment design, Populous has created a master plan for Kai Tak Sports Park that will see the 28-hectare site being developed into an urban oasis which integrates high-quality sports venues with retail, wellness, recreational and community spaces. Nestled in a parkland setting with Hong Kong’s iconic Lion Rock as a backdrop, the precinct revolves around the bold and unique Kai Tak Sports Avenue. This indoor and outdoor pedestrian walk starts at Station Square and takes patrons all the way through the immense site; connecting key facilities with the Dining Cove which overlooks Victoria Harbour — one of the most recognizable views in the world.

The Sports Park will be easily accessible from the adjacent Station Square and two public transport interchanges. It will be a 10-minute walk from the newly planned Kai Tak and Song Wong Toi MTR stations and within walking distance of the Kowloon City Ferry Pier. Pedestrian walkways will connect the Sports Park to new developments in To Kwa Wan, Ma Tau Kok, Kowloon City and Kai Tak districts.

CHALLENGE.  Kai Tak Sports Park is Hong Kong’s new, state-of-the-art, multipurpose sports complex that will accelerate the advancement of sport in Hong Kong. The brief outlined a commitment to developing a high-quality sporting venue that will reinforce Hong Kong’s global status while also meeting community needs and aspirations.

INNOVATION.  The solution was to provide modern multipurpose venues that also improve their capacity for hosting major international sports events, while alleviating the existing shortage of public sports facilities and open space.

The design consists of a covered Kai Tak Sports Avenue, connecting all key facilities of the Sports Park with the adjacent Station Square, Kai Tak MTR Station and Sung Wong Toi MTR Station and leading to the harbor-front promenade. The Indoor Sports Centre will provide a large multipurpose space, and with most of its 10,000 seats retractable or removable it is not only suitable for hosting major competitions but will also provide many indoor sports courts for everyday community use. The 5,000-seat Public Sports Ground is suitable for hosting school athletics meetings, athletics training and local football league games. It will also be open to the public free of charge for jogging and exercise.

The focal point of the Sports Park is the 50,000-seat Main Stadium, with “Pearl of the Orient” as its façade design theme. With a soundproof retractable roof and flexible pitch surface the Main Stadium is ideal for hosting major football and rugby games. Through the installation of separation drapes, stage setting and various equipment, the Main Stadium can also be used for hosting entertainment and community events of a different nature and scale.

The Kai Tak Sports Park will also provide large open space for public enjoyment, with facilities such as outdoor ball courts, open lawn areas, children’s play areas, fitness stations and more. Other facilities in the precinct include a health and wellness center, a bowling center, retail, food and beverage outlets and about 850 parking spaces.

IMPACT.  Kai Tak Sports Park is poised to become Hong Kong’s biggest sports venue with world-class sports facilities and leisure spaces that are accessible to the whole population and international visitors.

Purpose-built to host an extensive portfolio of international, regional, and local events, as well as a full range of community sports and activities, Kai Tak Sports Park will support the Government of the HKSAR’s aims to promote sports in the community, champion elite sports and enhance Hong Kong’s reputation as a center for major international sports events.

"The Kai Tak Sports Park, occupying 28 hectares of land, is the Government’s most important investment in sports infrastructure in recent decades. When completed, it will become the biggest sports venue in Hong Kong."

“We are looking forward to working closely with Kai Tak Sports Park Ltd’s team to create a world class sports park with high quality facilities for the use and enjoyment of the sports sector and the Hong Kong community,” a Government spokesman said.

When it commences operation, the Kai Tak Sports Park will provide high quality sports facilities to support the future sports development of Hong Kong.

Populous will work locally with recognized global industry leaders like ASM and Lagardère Sports.
